Soundscape is an exhibition park created alongside the Grand River in Cambridge, Ontario. Via a series of monolithic concrete structures, unique auditory environments are revealed; creating a new relationship between the rivers edge and the visitors. Determined by the shape and size of the concrete forms, the volumes are matched with a pre-existing auditory condition along the riverside; ranging from light trickles down the river, to raging waters spit from the hydro dam. These natural conditions are modified by the form encapsulating them, whether amplifying, resonating, reverberating, diffusing, or reflecting. A second layer of experience is added with the interaction of the user. The spaces, suggested by the sound qualities crafted, become an opportunity for an exhibition space, of various art forms. The spaces are fully activated with occupation, allowing the user to explore the sound qualities of nature, the imposed architectural form, and their own ability to contribute. The forms host and elevate pre-existing conditions of the natural conditions as well as give opportunity for exhibitions, creating a new appreciation and relationship to the waterside.
